If you don't have enough items for upgrade, you can pay for missing items with keys. The items required for upgrading are kept in your barn and count against the available storage. Keys can be substituted for the other items to upgrade faster. Upgrades will require a combination of Barn Padlocks, Barn Nails, Shovels, and sometimes other items such as Coins or Tin. You can upgrade the Barn to increase its capacity. When you start you have 50 spaces in your Barn. You can discard items until your stored items drops below the 90% mark. A barn with 50 spaces lets you discard items when you reach 45 items. You do not get coins for these items, it just allows you to free up space. Once your barn is 90% full, you have the option of throwing away items. This is the only way to free up space until you are able to upgrade or sell at the Farm Stand. If you are getting too many items that you can't sell, you can throw some away. Unless you upgrade your barn, you will find that your storage fills up quickly. Until you get your Silo, all ingredients, forged items, and recipes are stored in the barn. The Barn is a type of limited Storage for your farm.
